RCCP Campaign Activity

Registrants Survey   June 2010

In February 2010 the Department of Health published Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) – the UK Way Forward. It seeks to redefine education and career pathways for the wider healthcare science workforce. In April 2010, the Department also published Modernising Scientific Careers – an England Action Plan, which sets out how the programme will be implemented across England. Similar implementation plans will be published in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the coming weeks and months.

MSC establishes that the statutory regulation of clinical physiologists will happen as part of the regulation of the wider healthcare science workforce.

Given the potential of the MSC to significantly delay statutory regulation for clinical physiologists, it is important that registrants carefully consider how they wish the RCCP to proceed with its campaign for regulation.

To ensure the RCCP has a clear understanding of the needs and thoughts of registrants, we would be very grateful if you could complete a short on-line questionnaire.

If you are unable to access the on-line version, you can download a hardcopy version from the RCCP website:  www.rccp.co.uk under newsletters.

The deadline for completion is 30 July 2010.

Statement on the withdrawal from the Irish Cardiac Society Conference

The Society for Cardiological Science and Technology – Northern Ireland (SCST-NI) committee has discussed the requirements for the organisation of the cardiac physiologist day at the Irish Cardiac Society (ICS) conference at some length.  Its takes a great deal of time and energy to organise the cardiac physiology component of the ICS conference.  However, in recent years, there has been a steady decline in the numbers of cardiac physiologists from Northern Ireland (SCST-NI) in attendance, and the current working climate in Northern Ireland is not conducive to increasing attendance in the near future.  Unfortunately, the funding requirements for the conference have recently increased to a point that is prohibitive for SCST-NI.

Hence, it is with regret that I wish to inform the membership that SCST-NI is unable to support the organisation of the cardiac physiology day at the Irish Cardiac Society conferences in October 2010.  Instead, it is our intention to extend the spring meeting, which is more accessible for our membership.

A listening event was held last August to provide an overview. Due to the lack of Clinical Physiologists in attendance a further listening event was requested and will be held on 10th February in Belfast.

19-June-08 Many thanks to Alan Caulfield for passing this very exciting article onto us. Found in the British Journal of Cardiac Nursing, June 2008 Vol 3 No 6. It shows that support for state registration is growing for different sectors as all begin to accept the role and need of Cardiac Physiologists.

ICS Coordinator: Anne-Marie Magee

Treasurer: Barbara McDonald

Once again the call has gone out to all Cardiac Physiologists to write to their MP's to further promote the continuing difficulties with State Registration and the constant delays which has brought this about.

Please see the documents section to obtain a copy of this letter and to use it as a template if you so wish to when writing to your MP. You will also find within the documents section the article published in the SCST magazine which discussed the problem of State Registration and it's ideas when writing to your MP.
